China’s “Golden September” disappoints as electric cars close the gap
The usual seasonal boost in September fails to materialize. New-energy vehicles are gaining ground and narrowing the lead held by combustion cars.
China’s car market is entering the autumn period without September’s usual sales surge, despite the month traditionally being favorable for deliveries. The slowdown is reducing expectations for the so-called “Golden September” and confirms that demand remains selective.
Meanwhile, new-energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids, continue to gain ground against internal-combustion vehicles (ICE). The shift between the two categories is accelerating, driven by a broader product range and price pressure, making the transition increasingly urgent for traditional automakers.
