EREVs strike back: the electric car with an onboard generator
Extended-range electric vehicles are back in the spotlight, combining electric drive with a generator that recharges the battery.
EREVs, or extended-range electric vehicles, are returning to the spotlight. The wheels are still driven by an electric motor, while an internal-combustion engine powers a generator that supplies energy to the battery when needed.
The formula aims to reduce range anxiety and dependence on charging infrastructure while preserving an electric-car driving experience. It is not, however, a zero-emission vehicle in use, since the generator burns fuel. In Italy, it could become a middle ground between pure EVs and conventional hybrids.
