EREVs, the return of the electric car with an onboard generator

Extended-range electric cars are back in the spotlight, offering more driving range and less reliance on charging infrastructure.

EREVs, or extended-range electric vehicles, are once again attracting attention. The main powertrain remains electric, while a compact combustion engine generates electricity to recharge the battery when needed. Unlike conventional hybrids, it generally does not drive the wheels directly.

The solution aims to reduce range anxiety and make long journeys easier where charging stations are still limited, including in Italy. The trade-off is greater technical complexity, with added weight, fuel use and emissions from the generator.
