In the 1920s, Henry Ford invested in Brazil to secure cheap rubber and created Fordlandia, a model community in the Amazon rainforest. The goal was to produce tires and bring a very American way of life and work to the region.
The project soon ran into climate problems, logistics issues, poor management and local tensions. The factory never truly took off, and Fordlandia became a symbol of how even an auto giant can get strategy wrong when it ignores the local context.
