Fordlandia, Henry Ford’s industrial dream that ended in failure
In Brazil, Ford’s attempt to produce cheap rubber collapsed amid management mistakes and a clash with the local environment.
In the 1930s, Henry Ford tried to build a factory-town in the Amazon to secure rubber supplies for his car empire. The project, Fordlandia, was meant to reduce dependence on Asian suppliers, but it quickly ran into climate problems, logistics issues and unrealistic business decisions.
The outcome was a massive investment with almost no payoff. Today, Fordlandia stands as a warning that even a giant automaker can get it wrong when it ignores local conditions and tries to export its own model without adapting it to the setting.
