Formula 1 in Rwanda: the deal that divides opinion
Kigali wants to bring the championship to Africa, but the plan raises questions over costs, human rights and the circuit’s construction.
Rwanda has reached an agreement to begin planning a Formula 1 Grand Prix near Kigali. The country intends to build a permanent circuit and bring the championship back to Africa, which currently has no race.
The project remains controversial. Critics point to the potential cost to public finances, Rwanda’s economic priorities and the human-rights record of Paul Kagame’s government. Building the venue and signing a final contract with F1 are still crucial steps.
