Formula 1 in Rwanda: the possible race remains controversial
Kigali is negotiating to host an African Grand Prix, but human rights concerns and tensions in the Democratic Republic of Congo fuel criticism.
Rwanda aims to bring Formula 1 back to Africa with a plan for a permanent circuit near Kigali. Talks with the championship are ongoing, but there is still no official date or final agreement. The bid is part of F1’s strategy to expand its global presence.
The proposal remains controversial. Organisations and observers challenge Paul Kagame’s government over its human rights record and alleged support for M23 rebel forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, accusations rejected by Kigali. Critics fear that the race could help legitimise the government.
