Formula 1 looks to Rwanda for a return to Africa
Kigali is pursuing the championship with a dedicated project as the prospect of an African Grand Prix returns to F1’s commercial agenda.
Formula 1 is assessing Rwanda as a possible venue for a future African Grand Prix. Kigali wants to use the event to strengthen tourism and its international profile, while the championship is seeking new growth opportunities beyond traditional markets.
There is currently no agreement or calendar date. The project involves building a circuit in the capital’s area, but funding, infrastructure and sporting requirements still need to be defined. The interest confirms F1’s desire to return to the continent, absent from the calendar since 1993.
