Developing a battery in-house is not, by itself, a violation. Automakers can design proprietary cells, modules and battery-management systems, provided they do not copy protected technologies or infringe other companies’ patents.
Before reaching cars sold in Europe, every solution must also pass safety, reliability and type-approval checks. The issue is central to the electric-vehicle race: technological independence can cut costs and speed up innovation, but it must comply with the rules.
