India sets August auto sales record as alt-fuel cars beat petrol

In August, India’s auto market reached a new monthly high, driven mainly by alternative-fuel vehicles. For the first time in passenger-vehicle registrations, this category moved ahead of petrol cars, highlighting a fast shift in buyer preferences.
In India, running costs and refuelling access matter a lot, which is why hybrids, EVs and CNG models are gaining ground. For the industry, it is a key signal: even in major emerging markets, the energy transition is no longer a distant bet, but a trend already visible in the numbers.
