Joint ventures launch an electric-car counter-offensive in China
Foreign brands are accelerating with EVs, plug-in hybrids, local research and sharper pricing to close the gap with Chinese automakers.
Joint ventures between international automakers and Chinese partners are preparing a new offensive in the battery-electric vehicle sector. After losing ground to local brands, they are focusing on dedicated platforms, technology development in China and broader line-ups, including plug-in hybrids.
The strategy also relies on more competitive prices, software updates and a stronger ability to respond to domestic customer preferences. Rising competition is therefore forcing foreign manufacturers to shorten decision-making times and strengthen their presence in the world’s leading electric-mobility laboratory.
