On 29 September 1991, Nigel Mansell made history by winning the first Formula 1 Grand Prix at the new Circuit de Catalunya. Driving for Williams, the Briton finished ahead of Alain Prost’s Ferrari and the other Williams of Riccardo Patrese.
The race is also remembered for the spectacular wheel-to-wheel battle between Mansell and Ayrton Senna on the opening straight. Ferrari still secured second place, while Mansell strengthened his title bid during a season dominated by Williams.
