Stewart wins F1’s first red-flagged Canadian Grand Prix
In Montreal in 1973, the Scotsman took a historic win in a race shaped by rain, chaos and a stoppage.
On 23 September 1973, Jackie Stewart secured a victory in Canada that would go down in the history books: it was the first Formula 1 Grand Prix to be stopped by a red flag. In Montreal, the weather turned the race into a nightmare for drivers and marshals, forcing officials to halt proceedings after a string of incidents and extreme conditions.
When the race restarted, the Scot held onto the lead and brought home a crucial win, also important in his title fight. That race is still remembered today as one of the moments that changed how safety is managed in F1.
