What to do after hitting an animal with your car
Make the road safe, protect people and call for help: the essential steps after a collision with an animal.
After the impact, pull over somewhere safe, switch on the hazard lights and check for injuries. Do not approach an animal that is frightened or aggressive, as it may react unpredictably. Call the emergency services if the road is dangerous or anyone is involved.
Report the incident to the police or the relevant veterinary service, giving the animal’s location and condition. Photograph the damage and note any witnesses for your insurer, without moving the animal unless there is an immediate danger. In some countries, reporting requirements vary according to the species involved.
