MotoGP Seamless Gearbox Technology Reaches Electric Motorcycles
Racing transmission technology is moving to battery-powered bikes to improve acceleration, efficiency and motor usability.
The seamless gearbox, developed to minimize interruptions in power delivery during MotoGP gear changes, is finding a new application on electric motorcycles. Some projects are experimenting with multi-speed transmissions designed to make motor response smoother.
An electric vehicle does not require a gearbox, but one can keep the motor operating in its most efficient range, improving acceleration and range. The downside is greater complexity, bringing extra weight, cost and components compared with a single-speed solution.
